Each summer, a quieter magic takes over San Miguel de Allende. The kind that doesn’t flash across Instagram feeds or clink from rooftop bars, but instead drifts from centuries-old instruments, fills the Teatro Ángela Peralta with crescendos, and builds bridges between generations of artists.
That magic has a name: the Music Society of San Miguel (MSSM), the city’s homegrown steward of chamber music, now leading the charge in reimagining classical performance for a new era. What began as a revival of the once-legendary Chamber Music Festival is now a bold, inclusive platform for sonic exploration, emerging talent, and community transformation.
The Gala: Young Stars and Old Souls Collide
The pinnacle of the season arrives on August 9, with the Rising Stars Showcase Gala at Hotel La Morada, a candlelit homage to the future of chamber music. Here, standout students from MSSM’s Piano Seminar and Strings Academy perform shoulder to shoulder with their world-renowned mentors, offering an intimate glimpse into the next generation of classical luminaries.
Of course, this is San Miguel, where multisensory experiences reign supreme. Guests will be treated to a curated three-course dinner paired with vintages from Viñedo San Miguel, and surrounded by original works from acclaimed Mexican painter Alejandro Trejo. It’s chamber music as full-body immersion — notes, wine, brushstrokes, soul.

The Concert Series: Masters in Motion
As part of FASMA (Festival of the Arts San Miguel), MSSM hosts three powerhouse performances that balance reverence and innovation:
August 2: Jonah Kim & Friends
MSSM Artistic Director and cello virtuoso Jonah Kim leads a dream ensemble featuring pianist Sean Kennard, violinists Doori Na and Eric Silberger, Mexican pianist Javier García-Lascurain, and members of the Querétaro State Philharmonic: Adrián Barrera (violin), Mady Alford (viola), and Guillermo Sánchez (cello). The program includes works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, and premieres by Sheridan Seyfried.
August 8: Gile Bae Recital
Dutch Bösendorfer artist Gile Bae presents a poetic journey through Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Prokofiev, balancing fire and finesse with astonishing sensitivity.
August 13: Chuchito Valdés & Latin Jazz Quartet
The rhythm shifts, but the virtuosity remains. Seven-time Grammy nominee Chuchito Valdés, heir to Cuba’s jazz legacy, takes the stage alongside Victor Monterrubio (drums), Antonio Lozoya (double bass), and Julian Mendieta (percussionist). Joining them in a special collaboration is Iranian multi-instrumentalist Nader Khaledi, for an explosive night of Latin jazz and global fusion.
The Mission: Music as Access, Equity, and Heritage
From August 2 to 13, MSSM doesn’t just host concerts, it builds pipelines. Dozens of young string players and pianists receive world-class mentorship from MSSM’s faculty, including Jonah Kim, Gile Bae, Sean Kennard, Doori Na, Eric Silberger, and Paulina Derbez. Many are supported through scholarships that reflect the society’s commitment to equity and access.
At its core, MSSM is less about nostalgia and more about regeneration. The board, led by Executive Director Luis Eduardo Quezada and Artistic Director Jonah Kim, operates with a clear cultural mandate:
- Make world-class music accessible to all
- Uplift young artists
- Celebrate diversity, community, and shared heritage
- Solidify San Miguel’s global cultural relevance without losing its local heart
Why It Matters
In a city so often photographed for its facades, MSSM invites audiences to listen. And not just to the music, but to the stories, legacies, and visions being carried forward by a new generation of performers. It is a quiet revolution in sound, rooted in tradition and reaching for something timeless.
This summer, skip the algorithm. Come hear what San Miguel really sounds like.
