Día de los Artistas at The Chapel of Jimmy Ray: A Celebration of Creativity and Community

Every October, San Miguel’s creative pulse beats a little louder. This year, The Chapel of Jimmy Ray Gallery honors International Artists Day with Día de los Artistas, a free community event that celebrates imagination, craftsmanship, and the spirit of artistic freedom.

Set against the kaleidoscopic backdrop of La Cieneguita’s most iconic art space, the exhibition brings together the works of Anado McLauchlin, Carlos Ramírez, Richard Schultz, and Meryl Truett, each one representing a distinct voice in San Miguel’s ever-evolving art landscape.

A Mosaic of Voices

Carlos Ramírez, born and raised in La Cieneguita, weaves his indigenous heritage into bold, intricate mosaics and tin works that shimmer with local symbolism. His art captures the rhythm of the land and the stories of those who came before him.

Richard Schultz, whose journey began in San Francisco’s Summer of Love, brings a lifetime of teaching, creating, and collaborating to Mexico. Together with his late husband, Anado McLauchlin, he transformed Casa de las Ranas and The Chapel of Jimmy Ray into living artworks, where color, chaos, and compassion coexist in joyful defiance of convention.

Meryl Truett, a curator, gallerist, and mixed-media artist, explores the liminal space between life and death through photography and encaustic wax. Her ethereal pieces echo the fleeting light of Día de Muertos, blending memory, spirituality, and storytelling. Visitors will also have the chance to win one of Truett’s artworks through a raffle during the event.

More Than an Exhibition

The afternoon will unfold with live music by DJ Bruno Landis, whose set promises to carry visitors through a sensory journey of sound and movement. Guests are encouraged to explore, mingle, and immerse themselves in the creative energy that defines The Chapel of Jimmy Ray, an ever-evolving shrine to self-expression and community.

As gallery founder Anado McLauchlin once said, “This event is about honoring creativity in all its forms, the joy of making, sharing, and experiencing art together.”
