This forgotten mill becomes a refuge of quiet beauty. Welcome to Hacienda El Aguacate, where ruin meets reverence, and design listens to the land.
Tucked into the wild ridges of Querétaro’s Ezequiel Montes—just under two hours from San Miguel de Allende—Hacienda El Aguacate rises from the bones of a 19th-century mill, transformed into an architectural poem of stone, silence, and regenerative design.
But this isn’t just a beautiful place. It’s a philosophy built from ruin.

The creative force behind it is GOMA, a visionary studio that acted not just as architects, but as caretakers, residents, and co-conspirators in reshaping the land. They didn’t “restore” the hacienda so much as listen to it, letting the landscape guide each decision. The result? A home that feels like it grew from the earth itself.

Split between two terraces, one echoing with vaulted stone bedrooms and golden dining rooms, the other draped in pools and shadows of former walls, El Aguacate is immersive and elemental. The details matter: clay tile floors, recycled quarry stone, a gold-leafed dining hall, wooden lofts built from salvaged beams. It’s luxury not as excess, but as reverence.
Move slowly. Wake to the sound of ash trees returning. Wander the zigzag trails, descend into ruins, soak in the silence. Even the pools, a reflective mirror atop a ravine, or a hidden basin beside the ruins, seem to ask you to look inward.
And yes, you can stay here.

The hacienda is entering a new chapter as a private rental for those seeking an off-grid, high-design experience rooted in time, place, and respect. It’s not for everyone. But for those who crave meaning in their escapes, it’s unforgettable.
Call it a retreat, a ruin, a regenerative dream. Whatever name you give it, Hacienda El Aguacate belongs on your list.
