Centro Cultural El Obraje | October 30 – November 2, 2025
In San Miguel de Allende, Day of the Dead isn’t just celebrated, it’s lived. The city becomes a vessel of memory, glowing with marigolds, sound, and soul. This year, artist Tomás Bürkey (co-founder of Festival de la Calaca ) invites the community into a space where art and ritual meet the digital age: Ascension & the Digital Altar, A Living Día de Muertos Experience at Centro Cultural El Obraj.
Bürkey’s work has always explored the connection between the sacred and the contemporary, and this project deepens that conversation. It is not simply an exhibition or performance, but an evolving act of remembrance that bridges tradition and transformation.
From October 30 to November 2 , the Digital Altar transforms El Obraj into a living monument. Projection mapping merges with traditional offerings as visitors contribute their own images, memories, and messages.
This year, the altar extends an even more personal invitation: the opportunity to adopt a niche in honor of a loved one. Each niche becomes a light within a larger tapestry of memory, an offering that connects hundreds of stories into one collective act of remembrance.
“Our Digital Altar is almost ready to go to print,” Bürkey shared, “and we invite everyone to take part by dedicating a niche to someone they wish to remember. Your contribution becomes part of a luminous collective offering that connects us all through memory and creation.”

On October 31 and November 1 , the celebration takes flight with Ascension: Zazil’s Journey , a multimedia performance that combines aerial dance, live music, and projections. Drawing inspiration from the visionary worlds of Leonora Carrington and Gonzalo Rocha , the piece explores transformation, courage, and the eternal dance between life and death.
Tickets are 350 pesos , and the experience promises to be both ethereal and emotionally charged, an immersion into light, sound, and myth. This is not simply theater but a journey of initiation that mirrors the heart of Día de Muertos: remembering in order to transcend.
Complementing the performance, El Obraj presents a special exhibition of sculptures by Leonora Carrington , one of Mexico’s most visionary surrealists. Her mythic figures appear as guardians of the space, echoing the themes of transformation and transcendence that fill the air. Together with Bürkey’s work, they create a world where the mystical and the digital coexist.
Ascension & the Digital Altar reminds us that remembrance is alive, shaped by every offering, every light, and every story shared. It invites us to see Día de Muertos not only as tradition, but as renewal.
Bring your photos, your marigolds, and your memories. Join the circle. Let what was once lost rise again in light.
