On October 29, polo comes to the vineyards outside San Miguel de Allende, with tailgates on the field side and the proceeds going to equine therapy for local children with disabilities.
Some afternoons in the Bajío are made for watching horses. The light goes gold over the vines, the dust rises in long soft clouds, and a crowd that came for the spectacle stays for the company.
On the last Thursday of October, that afternoon has a reason behind it. A day of competitive polo in the countryside outside San Miguel de Allende becomes a fundraiser for the quieter work horses do here: helping local children with disabilities find balance, confidence and a little more independence.
Equinoterapia SMA hosts Polo With Purpose on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Viñedos San Francisco. The event is presented with Viñedos San Francisco, Viñedos San Lucas and Grupo La Santísima Trinidad, and brings together polo players, local residents and the organization’s supporters for a day of sport, hospitality and community.
The format is the classic polo tailgate. Guests reserve a space along the field, set up with friends and family, and watch the match from their own patch of grass. Picnic essentials, chairs and decorations are encouraged, and prizes go to the best-dressed guests and the most creatively decorated cars. Play begins at 11:00, and guests are welcome to arrive earlier to set up.
Tailgate packages are US$400 for four guests, the equivalent of US$100 per person. Each one includes:
Proceeds benefit Equinoterapia SMA, a non-profit founded in 2023 that offers equine therapy to children with disabilities and developmental challenges, including cerebral palsy, autism and Down syndrome. Based at Rancho Ortega, the organization works with qualified therapists, trained horses and volunteers to help children improve their physical coordination, balance, communication, confidence and independence.
Its programs are designed to stay accessible to families whatever their ability to pay. That is what the tailgate tickets, the wine and the after-party are really funding: more sessions, for more children, at a price their families can manage.
