Troubled Clef Studios

Troubled Clef Studios is a professional recording and audio production facility catering to musicians, composers, and filmmakers in the countryside just outside San Miguel de Allende. Modeled after Sir George Martin’s legendary AIR Montserrat, the studio offers a high-stakes environment for tracking, mixing, and mastering far from the distractions of major metropolitan hubs. The facility spans 7,500 square feet of acoustically tuned space, centered around the expansive Montserrat live room. Inside, the atmosphere is focused and quiet, characterized by wooden surfaces, tall ceilings, and racks of glowing analog gear. The control room serves as the nerve center, where an imposing Neve 8232 console sits alongside Focal Trio 11 monitors and modern digital workstations, balancing vintage warmth with contemporary precision. The technical inventory functions as a working museum of audio history. Musicians have access to a Yamaha C7 concert grand piano, a 1960s Hammond B3 organ, and a collection of over 55 microphones including vintage Neumann U47s and AKG 414s. The studio supports everything from intimate vocal production to complex film scoring and game audio design, utilizing a mix of SSL automated controllers and classic outboard gear. Artists come here to disappear into their projects, finding a rare combination of technical sophistication and rural stillness that allows for total immersion in the recording process.
